Elementary
Azerbaijani , consisting of 12 units, 4 review units,
appendices, and English-Azerbaijani and Azerbaijani-English
glossaries, includes the following components.
Conversations
are the centerpieces of each unit. Each unit contains one
or more core conversations around which the other sections
of the unit are built. The language of these conversations
is natural, not artificial. They are generally short can
easily be memorized. All the material in each unit, including
supplementary vocabulary, useful expressions, cultural notes,
and various types of drills, are designed to complement
and elaborate upon these conversations. An English translation
is provided for each conversation.
Each
unit focuses on certain functions and grammar points and revolves
around particular topics. Each grammar focus covers one particular
grammar point, and these detailed grammatical explanations are
further strengthened by exercises and examples in Azerbaijani.
Drills
and pair work exercises are an important means for going over
the topical or grammatical material presented in conversations.
Reading texts were
generally written for the textbook in the first half of the
book and taken from written sources in the second part. Most
of the reading selections enhance the grammatical and/or topical
points covered in the same or previous unit(s).
Cultural
notes and proverbs are included to give the learner a broader
view of Azerbaijani culture.
Each
unit contains 8-16 exercises. Some exercises are mechanical
and others are communicative in nature. Transalation exercises
are included, as well.
Vocabulary
given at the end of each unit covers all of the new words in
that particular unit. There are sections on sections on pronunciation,
phonology, morphology, and lexicon.
Audio drills should
be used with the CDs. These drills are an important and fun
way to strengthen and reactivate the knowledge the learner
gains in each unit.
After every three
units a review unit is included, that goes over the materials
covered in the previous three units.
A cumulative glossary
including approximately 2,400 words is included at the end
of the book.
Appendices
include an answer-key to the audio drills, a list of conjugations
for four basic Azerbaijani verbs in the most frequently used
verbal tenses and moods, and English translations and equivalents
of the Azerbaijani proverbs presented in the book.
